Monkshood is in the buttercup family. It has dark blue flowers growing symmetrically on

shoots off the stem. The flowers have a closed in shape and the plant gets the name “monks

hood” from this. The plant is extremely poisonous with the alkaloid aconitine being the

prominent toxin formed. The plant really relates itself to the nerve-sense system.

Aconitum is used for sharp, neuropathic or burning pain. Often people have anxiety and

cold extremities. The oil of the plant is quite effective for topical neuropathic pain. In

Europe the oil is highly valued as an effective remedy for topical neuropathic pain. Herpetic

neuralgia responds well to repeated applications of this. Patients respond very quickly. I

have seen topical cancer pain relieved quite well with this remedy. MH

A warm compress can be applied with this oil 30 minutes TID PRN for pain in cases of

sciatica, cervical stenosis, and other similar conditions of nerve impingement.

Precaution: Not to be taken internally. Not to be used in children under 5 years old.
