Karl-Ernst Schäfer (*1912 Germany; † 1981 Old Lyme (Conn), USA)[1] was a professor of environmental physiology in the USA, a former submarine officer. As a medical researcher he carried out studies on carbon dioxide for the Navy.[2] Together with Gerhard Kienle he organized the symposium "Menschengemäße Physiologische Wissenschaft und Medizin" ("Man-centered Physiological Science and Medicine") in Herdecke, Germany, September 24-28 1973,[3] from which the Free European Academy of Sciences (FEAW) and later the University of Witten/Herdecke developed.[4] He edited the congress lectures in the volumes "Toward a man-centered science" (1977)[5], "Basis of an Individual Physiology" (1979)[6], and "Individuation Process and Biographical Aspects of Disease" (1979)[7]. He was involved with Otto Wolff in the founding of the U.S. Physicians Association for Anthroposophic Medicine (PAAM).

Schaefer came to the United States from his native Germany in 1949 and joined the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory in New London. He was director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences there from 1972 until his retirement in 1978.[2]
