Peter Matthiessen (* May 25, 1944 in Calw; † April 30, 2019 ) was a neurologist, psychiatrist, anthroposophic physician and professor of philosophy of medicine and complementary medicine.[1]

Curriculum vitae

Peter Matthiessen attended the Free Waldorf school Stuttgart-Uhlandshöhe[1], studied medicine in Marburg and Washington State University St. Louis.[2] He received his doctorate in 1971 on Histometric studies on the developmental dynamics of the post-kidney in the rat[1]. He completed further training as a specialist in neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy in Herdecke, Dortmund and Marburg.[3] He was co-founder in 1983 of the Witten-Herdecke University (UW/H).[2][4] From 1987 to 1993, he was a board member of the Free European Academy of Sciences (FEAW), a predecessor organization of the UW/H. [1] In 1993, he became the first holder of the Gerhard-Kienle Endowed Chair of Medical Theory and Complementary Medicine at UW/H.

In 1986-1996, Matthiessen was commissioned by the German Federal Government to conduct the first academic Inventory of complementary medicine in Germany ("unkonventionelle Methoden der Krebsbekämpfung (UMK)" [unconventional methods of cancer control] and from 1994[5] "unconventional medical directions (UMR)"[6])[2] and was German Delegate of the EU project "Unconventional Medicine, COST - B4 - Program" running from 1994 to 1998.[7][8] He was one of the founders and later deputy speaker of the president of the German Medical Association, Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe, launched the "Dialogforum Pluralismus in der Medizin" in the fall of 2000, which "advocates a fruitful exchange between orthodox and complementary medicine." [9][10][11][4] In 2009, he became emeritus and Peter Heusser succeeded him to the Chair. [12]He was a member of the four-member executive board of the International Research Advisory Board of the Medical Section of the Free School of Spiritual Science.[13]

Research and main areas of activity

Peter Matthiessen advocated a pluralism of perspectives, methods and theories in medicine. This was already a founding impulse of the University of Witten/Herdecke. He advocated greater consideration of the medical judgment of the individual physician and brought forward methodological criticisms of common study designs in medicine.[14]
