One of the main founders of the hospital was Gerhard Kienle (1923-1983).[1] A main motive in the social design of the founding period was flat hierarchies without chief physicians and head nurses.[1][2] Kienle intended to create a university in association with the hospital. This led to the founding of Witten/Herdecke University.

For medical students of Witten/Herdecke University there is an Integrated Curriculum for Anthroposophic Medicine (ICURAM)[3][4][5]. A similar program exists for students of psychology [Integrated Companion Program in Spiritual and Anthroposophical Psychology (IBAP)].[6]

Together with the University of Witten/Herdecke, the GKH operates training stations for medical students in the practical year in four departments, in which the students take over patient care under the supervision of physicians.[7][8] These were developed as part of the Integrated Curriculum for Anthroposophic Medicine (ICURAM),[8] are based on international training projects (Clinical Education Wards)[8][9] and received a NRW teaching award in 2015.[10]

On the grounds of the hospital is the Dörte Krause-Institute, a nursing school. It was founded in 1970 and has 75 nursing training positions.
